ARTS & CRAFTS OAK AND WALNUT WARDROBE
ARTS & CRAFTS OAK AND WALNUT WARDROBE
An exceptional quality Arts & Crafts inspired wardrobe, commissioned for a private collection on the Isle of Wight. This four door wardrobe has been meticulously crafted in specially selected quarter-sawn English oak with hand-crafted walnut fretwork panels and lined in cedar.
The bronze metal work is designed as a heart motif, planished on a plain rectangular back-plate with a rope twisted handle. These were made by Harts in Chipping Camden, famously associated with Ashbee’s Guild of Handicraft.
The walnut fretwork panels were inspired by the wonderful design work of Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo and his iconic chair-back. A similar ‘whiplash’ design by Mackmurdo for Wren’s City Churches (1883) is thought to be at the forefront of the Art Nouveau period.
The design as a whole was inspired by a George Walton wardrobe once owned by Patch. The ‘A’ line design of the frame is in keeping with the architectural design of the house for which it was made.
From a consultation process with the client, this design evolved and is now insitu, standing proudly amongst original pieces of the period including Mackintosh, Baillie Scott, Voysey, Ashbee, Gimson and many more rare and exceptional items, proving that the legacy of the Arts & Crafts Movement is still as inspirational today as it was then.
Patch welcomes commissions and with an exceptional team of craftsmen at his side, more wonderful Arts & Crafts inspired pieces could be made.
