WALTER CRANE (1845-1915)
Walter Crane was a prolific artist, designer, illustrator and he produced numerous designs for textiles, carpets, ceramics, stained glass and wallpaper. By the mid 1870s he was designing wallpaper for Jeffrey & Co, producing more than 50 designs over four decades. His association with Jeffrey & Co gained him an international popularity. In 1887 he designed the cover for a book of wallpapers manufactured by Jeffrey & Co. Wallpaper art was very popular in the nineteenth century and although dominated by William Morris artists such as Burne-Jones and Crane were sought out by the proprietor of Jeffrey & Co, Metford Warner, in order to elevate the wallpaper to the level of art.
