Sir Edmund Elton (1846-1920) was a self-taught artist potter. He established his Sunflower Pottery at Clevedon in 1881. He began experimenting with metallic glazes and developed his famous crackle glaze in 1902 . He began firing liquid gold and platinum over a cracked glaze base. He was mainly inspired by Japanese design and early European grotesque pottery.
