F358 ART DECO PAIR OF ARMCHAIRS BY WARING & GILLOW

£4,850.00

Art Deco pair of armchairs

Constructed in silky oak and covered in a faux suede fabric

Attributed to Serge Chermayeff

Waring & Gillow

Circa 1920s

Height 82cm. Width 78cm. Depth 80cm. Seat Height 40cm

Sleek modern luxurious feel to this pair of Art Deco chairs with they long seats and low backs, the faux suede fabric is how we bought the chairs which works well for the period but they could also look dramatic and very contemporary in a modern bright floral, think House of Hackney or a grey silk. The wood is a lovely warm colour and the construction is exceptional. Slab curved sides and stepped bases add an overall architect led feel to these 1920’s upholstered chairs. Could look well in a Deco setting or a very modern contemporary house.

Towards the end of the 1920s Waring & Gillow opened a new experimental modern art department. Serge Chermayeff was enlisted as Director partnering with the French based designer Paul Follot, head of Waring & Gillow, Paris. Together they attempted to bring a progressive Art Deco edge to the company. In 1928 they opened a large exhibition ‘Modern Art In Decoration and Furnishing’. It consisted of 68 decorated and furnished rooms situated on the 4th and 5th floors of the Waring & Gillow building Oxford Street London. The exhibition ran from November 1928 to January 1929
