Aubusson tapestries were manufactured in central France at Aubusson and the nearby town of Felletin. The industry developed around 1300 in family run workshops, gaining a world class reputation. During the 19th Centry reproductions of earlier floral tapestries and carpets kept the industry viable. Post World War II a revival in tapestry weaving attracted many leading designers to the area, where a modernist colourful style developed. Jean Lurçat, Marcel Gromaire and Pierre Dubreuil were amongst the new generation of weavers.
